Partnering to provide mobility to people in need

Partnering to provide mobility to people in need
There are 80 million people worldwide who need a wheelchair, and too many of them live in under-resourced nations where access to this essential mobility aid is out of reach. As a result, they suffer from isolation and limited opportunities. Invacare is committed to changing this reality, which is why we have partnered with Free Wheelchair Mission to support these individuals.
At Invacare, our primary mission is to improve the quality of life and "make life experiences possible" for people with mobility challenges. However, we believe that being a leader in our industry is not just about generating revenue; it’s also about taking social responsibility and making a meaningful impact. That’s why Invacare is proud to support Free Wheelchair Mission in helping those most in need around the world.
Free Wheelchair Mission is a humanitarian non-profit organization that designs and manufactures wheelchairs at no charge for people with disabilities living in under-resourced nations. Since its founding in 2001, the organization has distributed more than 1.5 million wheelchairs, and their goal is to provide three million wheelchairs by 2035. At Invacare, we are eager to support this ambitious mission in every way we can.
As part of our collaboration with Free Wheelchair Mission, Invacare is leveraging its expertise and resources to help enhance their efforts in key areas. We are sharing knowledge in product development to ensure that wheelchairs are not only accessible but also safe and durable. Our experience with wheelchair health and safety standards allows us to help Free Wheelchair Mission improve the quality of the wheelchairs they distribute.
In addition to this collaboration, since 2024, Invacare has been raising funds through the Move for Mobility initiative, reinforcing our commitment to improving the lives of those in need of a wheelchair. This annual global fundraiser invites Invacare employees and partners worldwide to get involved, raise awareness, and generate funds for people in developing countries who lack access to a wheelchair, during the month of May.
We’re excited to be part of this journey with Free Wheelchair Mission and to help provide greater access to mobility aids for those who need them most,” said Geoff Purtill, Invacare President & CEO. “By combining our joint resources and expertise, with our global partner Free Wheelchair Mission, we aim to raise awareness and help transform lives around the world. I am personally very proud that hundreds of our employees and partners have signed up to get active and support this cause.”
Nuka Hart, CEO for Free Wheelchair Mission, also commented, “We are grateful and proud of the strong partnership we’ve developed with Invacare over the past few years and are excited to see their teams moving in May to help us raise funds and awareness to provide wheelchairs to those who are waiting for them. Together, we are excited to work toward a long-term goal to get wheelchairs to communities with no access to mobility solutions.”
